When, Where, and How Are Supermassive Black Holes Fueled?

Abstract:
Supermassive black holes reside at the centers of most galaxies and can profoundly influence their evolution through episodes of intense accretion, phases called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Despite decades of study, one of the fundamental open questions in extragalactic astronomy remains: what physical mechanisms transport gas from galactic scales down to the vicinity of the black hole and trigger nuclear activity?
In this seminar, I will first provide a broad introduction to this problem and then present the research I carried out during my PhD, aimed at understanding the connection between galaxy morphology and black hole growth. In particular, I will focus on the role of major galaxy mergers as a possible mechanism for fueling AGN activity across cosmic time.
To address this problem, I adopted a multiwavelength approach, combining observations from X-ray to far-infrared wavelengths and exploiting data from a variety of facilities, including ground-based observatories and recent space missions such as JWST and Euclid. I will also discuss how machine-learning techniques can be used to classify galaxies based on their morphology from large imaging surveys and identify galaxy mergers. By comparing the properties of active and inactive galaxies over different epochs of the Universe, these studies provide new insights into when, where, and how supermassive black holes are fueled. Finally, I will discuss the opportunities offered by the new generation of astronomical surveys and the prospects for unveiling the physical processes that connect galaxies and their central black holes.
