ESO – your science under Chilean skies
Giovedì 24 settembre alle ore 12:00 Marina Rejkuba (ESO, Garching) terrà un seminario dal titolo “ESO – your science under Chilean skies”.
Abstract:
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is an intergovernmental organization that designs, builds, and operates world-leading ground-based astronomical facilities in Chile while fostering international collaboration in astronomy. In this seminar, I will provide a brief overview of ESO’s history, mission, and major programmes before focusing on the operations of the La Silla Paranal Observatory (LPO). The talk will introduce the LPO operational model, with particular emphasis on the services, tools, and support structures that enable scientific research. I will present the current observing facilities and discuss the continued expansion of the observatory’s capabilities through the start of operations of MOONS, SOXS, and 4MOST, as well as future planned instrumentation. Drawing on practical experience in observatory operations and user support, I will address several recurring questions from the ESO user community. Topics will include the choice between Visitor and Service Mode observations, the different types of observing proposals and submission routes, telescope scheduling procedures, factors affecting the completion of observing programmes, and metrics used to assess the scientific productivity of the Very Large Telescope. The seminar will also provide an opportunity for discussion of other aspects of ESO operations and user services.
