The Milky Way in Motion

Abstract

Thanks to the second data release from ESA’s Gaia satellite, the astronomical community now has at its finger tips the parallaxes and proper motions of over a billion stars. While this represents only a tiny fraction of the total number of stars in our galaxy, it samples a significant fraction of the volume of the Milky Way. Gaia is not only a galactic cartographers dream machine: thanks to its proper motions it is setting the Galaxy in motion for us. For the first time we are able to map in detail the stellar kinematics beyond the solar neighborhood to significant distances. I present some of the most recent surprises that this data set has revealed regarding the dynamics and history of the Milky Way, and how Gaia is allowing us to see our home galaxy in a new light.
