A Gaia view of tidal tails of nearby globular clusters

Giovedì 26 novembre alle ore 15:00, il Dr. Antonio Sollima dell’INAF-Osservatorio di Astrofisica e Scienza dello Spazio di Bologna, terrà il web-seminar dal titolo: A Gaia view of tidal tails of nearby globular clusters.

Abstract

In this talk I present the results of an analysis of the projected density distribution of member stars over a wide area surrounding 18 Galactic globular clusters exploiting the photometric and astrometric information provided by the second data release of the Gaia mission. A 5D mixture modelling technique has been employed to optimally isolate the signal of the cluster stellar population from the contamination of the Galactic field, taking advantage of its different distribution in the space formed by colours, magnitudes, parallaxes and proper motions.
I show the collimated overdensities detected well beyond the tidal radius of a sub-sample of clusters, discussing the alignment between their orientation with the cluster orbital path, the relation between the fraction of stars contained in the tidal tails and the present-day destruction rate and the constraint to the shape of the Galactic potential provided by this dataset.
