Modified Newtonian Dynamics – a competitor to the dark matter paradigm

Giovedì 18 giugno alle ore 15:00 Tom Richtler (U. de Concepcion, Chile) terrà un seminario dal titolo “Modified Newtonian Dynamics – a competitor to the dark matter paradigm”.

Abstract:
About 1980 it became clear that flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies could not be explained by stellar population properties, but apparently needed invisible matter. Moti Milgrom (1983) proposed to modify Newton´s law F=m*a at low accelerations in a certain way to  obtain flat rotation curves without resorting to  dark matter. At this time, there was no hard reason for the scientific community to regard  this “MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND)” to be  a serious extension of Newton’s law. Its alleged arbitrariness, together with the general ignorance at this epoch of galaxy dynamics led particle dark matter for the majority of physicists to be the only imaginable answer to the missing mass problem in galaxy formation and cosmology, thus making the Universe a mystery. 43 years later, based on an immensely increased amount of data, the strong predictive power of  MOND must be acknowledged. The MONDian phenomenology among galaxies and galaxy groups can now be traced over orders of magnitudes in galaxy mass. Although many attempts of a theoretical founding of MOND have been undertaken, there is no consent, how MOND fits into a general understanding of gravity.
