A unified theory of CVs

Giovedì 18 marzo alle ore 15:00, il dr. Yael Hillman della Ariel University, Israele, terrà il web-seminar dal titolo: A unified theory of CVs .

Abstract

Cataclysmic variables (CV) are a class of close binary stellar systems comprising a white dwarf (WD) that accretes mass from its donor red dwarf (RD) and as a result, exhibits photometric variability. The family of CVs includes a handful of different types of systems, distinguished by the characterizations of the system’s variability, such as the time they last, their magnitude, and their recurrence. Observational analyses deduce that each different type has a specific range of typical mass transfer rates. Additionally, observations find different types of CV systems with the same orbital period (i.e., the same binary masses). This coexistence of systems with identical orbital periods but very different rates of mass transfer has been a longstanding puzzle for decades, along with the hypothetical proposal that the different types of CVs are in fact not different types, but rather different evolutionary stages. I will present a model supporting this theory, via simulation of the evolution of a WD+RD system from first Roche-lobe contact until the RD is eroded.
